Bhart Airtel chief executive Gopal Vittal said that the telco is trialing VoLTE in five cities, and will launch it in later part of the year.
“We already have voice service. Customers don’t care for call technology. We are clear that our VoLTE is in works, and trials are on in 5 cities. Towards the end of the year, we should be able to launch it,” he told reporters on Monday.
Currently, Reliance Jio is the only operator offering VoLTE services in the Indian market.
VoLTE allows an operator to offer both voice and data without switching between bands, with voice being just another application that rides on an LTE data network. Incumbents currently offers calling on the legacy circuit-switch technology.
A few handsets have already started receiving Airtel carrier update with support for VoLTE technology. Apple India support page also lists support for Airtel VoLTE in India for iPhone 6 and above.
