Greenfield 4G operator Reliance Jio aggressive launch with ‘free 4G services’ has forced other telecom operators (Vodafone, Airtel and Idea) to counter with similar offers in a bid to stop migration of users to Jio. Looking at the current ‘free strategy’, there are chances that Reliance Jio may extend the free 4G service offers beyond March 31, 2017.
“Jio may decide to extend freebies a couple of months beyond March 2017 if incumbent telcos get more aggressive on 4G pricing,” Rajiv Sharma, telecom analyst at brokerage HSBC, said in a note seen by ET.
Earlier this month, Reliance jio crossed the 50 million subscriber mark by 1 December. Jio achieved this milestone in less than three months after its full-fledged 4G services launch to emerge as the largest broadband operator in the country. According to sources, Reliance Jio — setting a new record — has acquired 1,000 customers per minute (since September 05) and 600,000 per day.
Jio has already extended its disruptive ‘Welcome Offer’, which allows customers free unlimited voice and data services until the end of March 2017. The operator introduced a ‘Happy New Year Offer’, under which customers that sign up to Jio 4G services by 4 March 2017 will have access to free unlimited services until 31 March 2017.
